I bought this for my group for Jewel of the Indigo Isles after they indicated that they wanted to really dive into the whole fantasy of naval combat. The book is very in depth and well balanced. The only "bad" thing I can say about it is that it's a bit dense and I think probably wouldn't be ideal for a more casual table, but if you're looking for a highly detailed ruleset, this is the best you can get.

Overall, this is a wonderful add on for Pathfinder, and I hope to use it in an actual campaign in the near future. However HoweverHowever, I was a little disappointed in the lack of wind rules. Using the weather gage is the key to seafaring combat. And these are ships, with sails they require the wind to come from specific directions, and that affects speed, maneuverability, shot accuracy, &c. Obviously, in a game like Pathfinder, there has to be some give. No one (except maybe me) wants to do a bunch of trigonometry in the middle of combat. But there are zero rules about it, and instead the ships will feel like cars instead of ships, just going back and forth against each other.Overall, this is a wonderful add on for Pathfinder, and I hope to use it in an actual campaign in the near future. However, I was a little disappointed in the lack of wind rules. I really liked the product ans the options it brings, unfortunately it also complicates the GM role a lot given that he / she needs to manage 8 different "roles" (NPCs) on the ship ! Now the ruleset is really awesome, and I have no doubt the authors have ideas to make it easier to run, which I have asked for on the product page. If this complication I have is adressed, the product would really be everything I was hoping for, and I would rate the product way higher, but for now and without answers it just seems way too much for one DM !

This is great work and well worth the money if you plan on fighting an ocean battle. You can modify the complexity and make it more basic if you'd like, that's what I did.

Brings a lot of needless complication to good combat ruleset. Would recommend only for those people really keen on simulating naval combat to tiniest detail, which unfortunately would make it also really long. Did notice few potentially imbalanced options though interesting ones.

A brilliant book for a set of rules not fully set out for 2e yet. Very impressed with the work that has gone into this with a lot of thought on how combat is run, and how new rules changes would mix it up and make it free like 2e ship combat. I didn’t enjoy Starfinder ship combat, but this feels a little more interesting and there is more than just combat rules.

What I love (with not too many spoilers)

  • Special Ship Ammo, is a brilliant twist on just firing adds a new element on what to use and how to really cripple or sink a ship. (Ale Shot is one I enjoy a lot)
  • Special magic items like Sails, Anchors, and crow nests. Really setup a cool way to augment and customise your ship and gives ideas and flavour for a GM to customise some special stuff.
  • How actions and reactions are worked into each ship role, there is a lot of high-level play that can be worked out if the team really want to be the best pirates out there.

If you’re looking to run ship combat this is the book for you, it has everything you need and is well laid out. These feels as close to official rules as you might get.

I am part of the game that is running these rules and they are working fantastically. The naval combat feels dynamic and there's always something to do, like Starfinder's ship system but streamlined for PF2e. I like the assumptions made and the generalizations should apply to most games and are easy to shake up if not. Overall, an excellent product that fills a specific niche not really covered in the game's systems and should appeal to anyone out to get some booty!
