Novel Implements: Shield, Scroll, and Staff

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Inside my first Infinite Master title, Novel Implements: Shield, Scroll, and Staff, you'll find rules for using a Shield Implement, a Scroll Implement, and a Scroll Implement on your Thaumaturge.

  • Shield Implement lets you float a shield in front of you, keeping your hands free. This also lets you Strike with it and gain the Implement Empowerment damage bonus
  • Scroll Implement lets you cast Phase Bolt as scaling proficiency innate occult spell cantrip and duplicate spells that target you
  • Staff Implement lets you craft a custom staff, give it charges, and cast the spells on it. The strongest staff implement thaumaturges can swap their staff implement every day.

This is an interesting product - great vibes from it. One thing I'd suggest is perhaps tweaking the staff implement charging to be *in lieu* of the normal "charges equal the highest level spell you can cast". As it's written, I believe they'd stack, and I don't know if it's a good idea for a thaumaturge with a spellcasting dedication to get a bunch more mileage out of it (or, conversely, for a caster with a thaumaturge dedication and Implement Initiate to double the charges they get every day. On the other hand, it is two feats...)

Otherwise, I like the theming. I don't know how much it feels like the scroll implement is really tied to *phase bolt*, as a spell (mechanically, it obviously is, but the narrative there feels lacking), but they do give fun alternative niches.

It's been a while since I wrote it, I'm not sure why I went with Phase Bolt specifically. It could have been a desire to use an occult cantrip and Daze would have been unsatisfying to many. I suppose Telekinetic Projectile is a good alternative as well, so perhaps I'll simply state "an occult cantrip of your choice".

I'll have to look more closely at staff and multiclassing when I get a chance; thanks for bringing that up!

I like these options, they are cool and flavorful. Couple notes:
1.) It might be easier to key the scroll's attack bonus off the class DC? Maybe add some more versatility to the cantrip, or some other cantrips?
2.) Repeat Scroll seems kinda bonkers, if you can repeat the highest slot of your other party members once a hour. I'd start with once a day and upgrade it to once every ten minutes. That way you get a powerful spell once a day, and later once a combat. Seems better balanced for a martial.
3.) Intensify Vulnerability for the shield gives cover, but that's a circumstance bonus, and so is the raised shield. Kinda does nothing - one action to intensify to get +2 AC vs. one action to Raise a Shield / Defendind Shield. (Sure, you also get some reflex bonus, but that's kinda niche). Maybe it'd be better to get some more AC as a status bonus, or to raise the shield's hardness against the target of the Exploit? As is it's kinda a surprising non-bo and only useful against reflex effects.

Thank you for the feedback!
1) It's possible to do this, and scaling an innate cantrip already isn't very hard, but Thaumaturge increases its class DC to expert too early; however, I think this does point out a flaw in staff implement that I'll have to fix. Regardless, I did add some additional features to the cantrip as you progress such as letting it trigger mortal weakness or personal antithesis which isn't otherwise possible.
2) You can repeat a single spell once per hour that specifically targeted or affected you; no fireballs or lightning bolts here unless you took friendly fire. Also if you think about the scroll thaumaturgy feat, it's not really that crazy
3) Thanks for that. It's supposed to stack like Tower Shield does, I forgot it would need specific wording for that

Edit: I'm wrong about class DC. I was looking at weapon expertise instead of class DC; whoops!

Updated version now live. Scroll always uses class DC and you gain a benefit to craft scrolls and get some free formulas. Added a benefit to paragon staff to reduce charge cost by 2 with intensify vulnerability. Shield's benefit now works like a tower shield giving you a +4 (after you Exploit, Intensify, and successfully Strike)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
