The Asylum of Heartville

The staff at the Heartville Home for the Deranged are kidnapping townsfolk!  What could a mental hospital want with perfectly ordinary citizens?  What secrets are held within its walls?

The Asylum of Heartville is an adventure designed for Pathfinder Second Edition.  It is intended for characters of 1st or 2nd level, and should ultimately raise them roughly to 4th level by its end.

Heartville is a sleepy town in a temperate and forested region of the fantasy campaign setting of your choice, whose problems radiate from a mental asylum about a mile to the north. The Heartville Home for the Deranged is run by the sadistic Dr. Rosalie von Breck and her team of researchers, who have delved so deep into the root causes of insanity that they themselves have fallen into its trap.

Unbeknownst to the citizens, von Breck now regularly kidnaps and torments innocent people for her own dastardly research. The party's mission is to put an end to von Breck's torturous methods and free her victims.

Several plot hooks are provided to help guide the players toward the asylum, which is fully detailed. Many important townspeople, as well as the complete asylum staff, are also detailed, and you're encouraged to add your own NPCs into the mix as well.

Features:

  • A terrifying adventure for unsuspecting low-level characters
  • 3 full-page, beautiful, meticulously hand-drawn maps
  • Plot hooks, wrap-up food for thought, and open follow-up questions
  • Several new hazards, traps, alchemical items, and dozens of fleshed-out NPCs
  • Detailed notes on all locations, NPCs, and items
  • Conspiracy theories, inconceivable evil, and memorable characters!
  • Fantastic creatures, dastardly illusions, deadly traps, and tons of treasure!
  • Gorgeous easy-to-read layout, typeset by hand in LaTeX
  • Spell-checking! I promise!

Author's note:  Thanks for checking out Heartville.  This is an opening adventure to my own world of Tol-Ruune (though you can play in whatever setting you wish), which I've now been detailing for nearly two decades.  I hope you enjoy playing it at least as much as I enjoyed writing it!  -- ari5av

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
